A Hamster named Bunny

Tonight landed Christi in the emergency room, but before I can tell you that story I must tell you this story...

So you may know that we have a dwarf bunny named Hamster. Now we have two dwarf hamsters one of which is named Bunny. This is all exactly how Shayla wants it and she couldn't be more pleased with the situation. Christi on the otherhand is way jealous that her sister got more pets. Her sobbing response to the news that Shayla got hamsters was "Why doesn't anyone believe me that I want a Siamese kitten". Of course Christi LOVES the hamsters and Angela thinks they are adorable too.(Proof-I saw her holding one today).

Tonight Christi was very worked up by the fact that Shayla got new pets as well as it was time for her to get her shot. Her anxiety magnified several symptoms that she had off and on the entire day: Shortness of breath, pain from mouth sores, and rapid heart rate. It was decided for our peace of mind that we would take Christi into the emergency room to be examined and have her counts checked. So Angela's Friday night on the town was spent with her good friend Becky (nurse) at Mercy Hospital with Christi. Nothing was found of any interest. Just an ANC of zero-no immune system. This just means more days of shots...poor thing.

Good morning Christi...
And bunny named hampster and hamster named bunny. Too funny... when my daughter was 7 she got a black kitten and named him snowball,...only he would always chase us and bite our ankles so we changed his name to Damien. He really is a nice cat, now!, He stopped chasing us and now chases the neighbours dog ! lol,

I pray that you have a better day today than yesterday Christi hon, you are in my thoughts and prayers as are Mom and Dad and dear little Shayla.
May God send an Angel to wrap the Thomas team in her giant wings and protect them as they journey thru the unknown, may strength, peace and love be of comfort now and dear God I pray for complete healing for Christi here on earth.
I so wish there were more I could do to help, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Love ya Christi, susan

Poor kid! I'm praying for her. So when are you getting a new kitty? I've got a couple rats you can have. You could name them Dog and Cat. Angela, I'm so proud of you for holding the hamsters. And just so you know, rats are less likely to bite than hamsters. I'm just saying.

I love you guys and my prayers are with you.

Hello dear Thomas Team! Oh, how darling that you have mis-matched Hamster & Bunny. You crack me up Shayla! What is the other hamster's name? Puppy? Pony?? :-) Christi, I'm SO sorry you have to deal with these stupid shots. I know you hate them so much, but they are going to help you while your counts are so low. If I could take a couple of them for you I would!! Instead, all I can do is send you my love and support. I second your wish for a Siamese kitten (sorry mom and dad!) They are SO LOUD!! Siamese sure love to talk a lot. Christi, see if you can get your mom & dad to show you a little video story on CNN's website - a Siamese mama cat was nursing a litter of PUPPIES! It was very cute and right up your alley.

Take care, dear ones!! Thinking of you every day!!

Dear Angela and Shayne,

Sorry that you had to spend Friday night in the emergency room, I hope Christi is feeling better now and enjoying Shayla's hamsters!!
The hamster's names are rather confusing!! I hope you have a cage for them with the bars very close together. When my kid's were small, we had hamsters (Hammy and Rosie) and they had lots of babies, they have so many at a time! It was great fun to watch them but the babies were so tiny they could get out through the bars!!! We had to buy one of those Hamster houses in some kind of plastic (I guess you've seen them?) with lots of tunnels. On several occasions we had hamsters escape, (from the cage) and ended up closing the doors and hunting for them!! Once we lost one of the parents for a few days, I knew it was in the kitchen, behind the units and the only way I could get it back was to lie on the floor in the dark, with a torch and be patient! When I heard it come out, I put the torch on and grabbed it, but only managed after a couple of evenings and several attempts!!!! So I hope you have a good cage or hamster house!!! Another thing, (in case you don't know) hamsters are solitary animals, they don't like being in a cage together, in fact the male wouldn't leave the poor female in peace and she had one litter after another, then the male didn't like the babies, so really it is best to have two cages and just put them in the same one occasionally. Good luck!
Sending prayers for Christi, I hope she will soon be feeling better.
Lots of love

:) Don't know why, but as I read the first 2 lines of today's note, the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue," popped into my head. Shayla's giving botht he bunnny and the hamster opportunities to develop ground-level resiliency and strength (qualities that abound in your family)!!!

Here's looking for continued moments of sunshine,

Are we allowed to start a 'Buy Christi a Kitten' fund?

I'm praying for all of you, as is my extended church family in frozen Maine.

Still zapping up the prayers for Christie...just a thought, if the shots are so terribly painful I'm sure I read on another site that you can get some sort of cream that deadens the skin for injections - I'm sure this has been explored already but thought I'd mention it, poor little thing must dread those shots. Prayers, prayers prayers...

At 11/2/06 1:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said... many Siamese kittens do you think you'll end up with now that you let the 'cat out of the bag' to speak!!...hee hee!! As always, many prayers to the T-Team!

I know that when my mom had to do shots at home (she has breast cancer), they prescribed EMLA cream to numb the spot beforehand. Maybe this would help Christi with her shots? Putting it on may even have a placebo effect and ease her mind a bit. Just a suggestion...I hope tomorrow is better! You are always in my prayers.

I hope Christi is feeling better today. What a night. That sweet little thing just can't catch a break. I'm praying so hard for her pain to go away!

You need to post a picture of all the pets together. It's starting to sound intersting. So glad Christi didn't have to stay in the hospital.

Oh, yuck, what a night! I'm glad your hamsters are settling in, and I hope Christi feels much, much better today. Bunny is a great name for a hamster, and much simpler than what our 5-year-old picked for our guinea pig: Emily Rose Butterscotch Hello Kitty Pig. Try saying THAT five times fast! (or at all...)

Hey Angela, Shane, Christi, and Shayla. I'm sorry you are not feeling well Christi and have to get those painful shots. I will be praying for you and so many others are praying for you too. I love the picture of you shopping at Barnes and Noble. I love that store too. You can never have enough books. I have signed this blog before but cannot find the comments I left. Maybe they were deleted, I am not sure. Shayla, that's great that you have hamsters. I think it is hilarious that you have a bunny named "hamster" and a hampster named "Bunny". I would get confused. I hope you have a very Happy Birthday. I did send you a card, it might be a little late, but it will be there. Christi I love you and care for you though I have never had the honor of meeting you. Take care and know you are in my daily thoughts and prayers and forever in my heart.

Dear Shayne,

I hate hickman's but is that an answer for Christi?

No more needles??

I am sad to read she hates it so much. Maybe we should send her a pet cat.

I know there is a family in Canada who has a dog they could spare you!! (Mr. Scrupper)

Shayla, Happy Birthday, tomorrow!

I'm sorry to hear that Christi is having such an emotional end of the week. Being sick takes such a toll on these little ones.
In regard to the shots, any chance that you could convince her to inject herself? We gave Eden a lot of independance (flushing her own tubes, removing her own dressing and choosing the spot for her shot each day) and it did help to make it easier for her. Maybe if Christi felt up to learning something like that (such a big girlk it would take to learn something like that!) it might not be so traumatic?
I'm glad that Shayla has such a vivid sense of humor. The names of her animals are GREAT! She's such a beautiful girl, you must be very proud of her.

I Too think you should get a simiee cat. After all they are quite smart just like you are and i think it would be a great match for you i have a freind involed in simieese resuse you should cheek them out they fly or drive the cat right to you. My freind got hers form Tn and we live in Ma. You could be helping a cat get a good home and getting your very own simmmies in one.

I pray you feel better soon. I pray for a merical if anyone should get you should. I pray for you seval times a day

Ok, Shayla - I'm sorry... I'm not a fan of the little furry things with tails that squeak... but you holding them does look awfully cute!

And Christi... just a caution about siamese cats... they are beautiful (I'm a huge cat fan) BUT they have one of the most annoying meows! If you could find a cat that whines, a siamese would be it! So... I would go for the friendliness factor and tabbies are the best for that - super duper cuddlers :-)

And as for the whole pet issue - I could be totally of base here - but I think Shayla might need her pets especially for times when you (Christi) have to go the hospital. I think her pets make her feel a little better and/or comforted when you're not home and not feeling well. So maybe look at it that way if you can.

I hope you're having a great weekend and feeling better all the time.

Much love,
